RALPH'S RANTS REVIEWS SAMARITAN

BEN Books Author Bobby Nash's ebook novella, Samaritan was reviewed by Ralph's Rants. You should check out what he has to say about it here or read it below.

Samaritan- A review (posted with permission of the reviewer)

Samaritan by Bobby Nash is a novella set in the future where man is exploring space aboard prospector ships. The Aquarius is one such ship. The Aquarius has been out in deep space for eight long years and is just now returning to Earth. In all that time they have not encountered another being of any species. That is about to change.

When the ship comes upon a seeming graveyard of spaceships and spaceship parts the crew is understandably curious and excited. For the first time they have evidence of life on other worlds. Sadly, as they are about to find out, it’s better off not answering certain questions, at least not at this time.

This is a VERY well written space adventure, and within its forty plus pages an entire story is told, and nothing is left wanting. I really liked this one a lot, even more than I expected too. It held my interest and the pace which started out slow built to a frenetic crescendo at the tales end. This is as much a horror story as it is Sci-fi, in the vein of ‘Alien’.

But therein lies the problem with this tale, to me at least. The end, while excellently and professionally written, felt a little too expected for me. The big surprise was pretty much what I expected to happen.

But do NOT let that deter you from reading this story. It honestly is one of the best things I’ve read in a long time. There’s very little sci-fi out there that I like. Most of it reads like bad Star Trek or Star Wars. Or it strives far too hard to be neither. This just read like a good sci-fi story. I’ve been lucky recently and read three good sci-fi stories in a row, including this one. You can’t go wrong here. Bobby’s characters are real and you don’t like all of them, which to me is the sign of a good writer, and a good story.

Give Samaritan a whirl. It’s a short but very engrossing story. Far better than most novella’s I’ve read recently.

#####

Thanks for the kind words, Ralph. I'm glad you enjoyed Samaritan.
Thanks for checking it out and taking the time to write. It is appreciated.

About SAMARITAN (an ebook novella by Bobby Nash):

Deep space.

The science ship Aquarius, under the command of Captain Jeremiah Rains has finally reached the end of its exploratory mission to the depths of uncharted space and is returning home to Earth.

Captain Rains and his skeleton military crew are tired and bored from the lack of adventure they expected to find out in the great beyond. The scientists, however, are extremely happy with their many discoveries.

When the ship comes upon the wreckage of a destroyed space vessel, the crew is surprised to find one survivor; a woman, quite possibly the most beautiful woman any of them have ever seen. Her name is Lari and all she wants is someone, some Good Samaritan, to take her home.

The catch is that her planet is located at the center of a black hole.

DOCTOR PANIC GIVES EVIL WAYS 5 STARS ON AMAZON!

Reader, Doctor Panic left a cool review of my novel, Evil ways at Amazon.

In this mystery suspense thriller, Bobby Nash introduces us to F.B.I. Agent, Harold Palmer. A guy who just wants to get away from it all and take a nice relaxing vacation with his brother Franklin, who has bought a newspaper publisher in the sleepy little town of Sommersville, GA. It has been awhile since he and his brother have gotten together and just kicked back. This is as relaxing as it gets folks. Harold no sooner arrives before stepping into a gruesome murder. He instinctively jumps right in to the investigation with the local sheriff-Tom Myers- and before you know it, there is a few other murders that occur right under their noses.

The book keeps you wanting to turn the pages as his grips you with suspense and excitement the whole way. I didn't want to put the book down, surrendering only to the need for sleep. If you like mystery and suspense with a little action thrown into the mix, this is a great read. It showcases some of Bobby's early work, and shows why he is a sought after writer in the field.

5 big stars for this one!

Can't wait for the next book, which will be out in 2013, and is called Evil Intent.

THE HEARTS HAVE IT!

There is truth in this.

I’ve moved a step forward in my 2013 writing schedule and it’s shaping up to be a busy year. So far, I have scheduled to write (or finish in some cases) several novels in the New Year. Novels already started and on tap to be finished are Evil Intent, Lance Star: Sky Ranger “Cold Snap!,” and Blood Shot.

You’d think that’s enough, right?

Not even close.

I’ve already started prepping Deadly Hearts!, the tentatively titled (so it’s possible it might change) follow up to Deadly Games!. I like the title because it allows me to keep the “Deadly” part of the title and also keep a game-related motif in the title. I made up a mock cover placeholder for the website, which I’m also posting here. This is not the final cover. I have an idea for the cover designed and mapped out. I think it’s going to look great. I love designing covers. It is a fun challenge. I’ve already come up with a title and cover design for a third book featuring John Bartlett and Benjamin West after Deadly Hearts!.

I’ve also had an idea for a follow up to Earthstrike Agenda, which was a surprise even to me. We’ll see what happens, but it’s possible we might just see Virginia Harmon in action again.

I have a few other project planned for 2013, but it’s a little too early to start talking about those, especially considering how easy it is for those plans to change.

Keep watching bobbynash.com and BEN Books for more details as they’re available.

Happy Cyber-Monday!

A BIT TOO OLD FOR COMICS? REVIEWS BOBBY NASH'S EVIL WAYS

Reader Robert McIntyre posted a fantastic review of my novel, Evil Ways over at his A Bit Too Old For Comics? Blog. You can read the full review here.

From the review:
“The whole story moves on at a cracking pace and no part of the plot is wasted no matter how trivial it may seems at the time of reading it, the whole book is littered with small clues throughout that take you on the same ride as the characters to the final conclusion of the book and what a conclusion it was.”

“I was hooked on the book from the first paragraph, and read the book in the space of a week which for me is a quick read; it’s also an indication for me on how good I think a book is if I read it that quickly.”

You can read the full review at http://toooldforcomics.blogspot.com/2012/11/evil-ways-by-bobby-nash.html.

Thanks so much for the kind words, Robert. I'm glad you enjoyed Evil Ways. This novel holds a special place in my heart, being the first published. I'm so excited to have it back out there. A new Harold Palmer thriller called Evil Intent is scheduled for 2013 (now I just need to finish writing the darn thing).

Sheriff Tom Myers was an unexpected surprise. As I got to know the character his part in Evil Ways continued to grow. The same things happened in Deadly Games! He was originally only going to be mentioned there, but the character kept telling me that he would be involved in the events of that novel. Of course, you should always listen to your characters. I did and I think the story is better for it.

I have a loose plot for a stand-alone novel featuring Sheriff Myers that I hope to write in 2013 (once I clean off my current slate of works in process). The character has become one of my favorites. Oh. I should also mention that Sheriff Myers makes a brief cameo appearance in Evil Intent as well.

Thanks again for the review. It is appreciated.

AN EVIL WAYS EXCERPT

It’s excerpt time. With BEN Books release of my novel, Evil Ways, I wanted to share the opening chapter from the novel for your enjoyment (and to hopefully tease you into picking up the book yourself - ain’t I a stinker?). The following excerpt is the opening chapter where we meet FBI Special Agent Harold Palmer for the first time. This sets up the story of Evil Ways, but also lays the groundwork for the upcoming Evil Intent novel, which will put Harold and Special Agent Carter Reidling on the trail of the mastermind behind the events in this excerpt.

Enjoy.

Bobby

“FBI! Do! Not! Move!”

Tensing beneath the loose tan coveralls, Jeff Davies knew his time was up. Slowly, oh so very slowly, he straightened to his full five feet eleven inches, arms cautiously rising. He knew the drill. He kept his hands open so the man behind him with the gun would see that he was unarmed.

Jeff Davies hated guns. Never touched the damned things. No good had ever come from them. His younger brother had died at age twelve because an angry, unpopular kid decided he’d had enough and carried his policeman father’s service revolver to school one morning. Young Pete Davies was murdered because some thirteen-year-old would-be-assassin was too nervous to shoot straight.

“Interlock your fingers behind your head.”

Jeff did as he was told. Not that he needed much instruction. This was not his first time on the wrong end of the law. Doubtless, it would not be his last. He knew the drill all too well.

“Take two steps back.”

Of course, Jeff complied with the lawman’s instructions. He moved slowly, careful not to give the agent any just cause to pull the trigger. In his mind a voice screamed, No sudden moves. No sudden moves.

No.

Sudden.

Moves.

“Get on your knees and cross your legs at the ankle.”

“S…sure,” Jeff stuttered.

He couldn’t believe how nervous he was. He wasn’t sure which was worse: having a Federal Agent behind him with a gun pointed at his head or staring at the timer slowly counting down to zero on the bomb in front of him.

Regardless, Jeff Davies was having a bad day, but he felt confident that the cause was worth it. He believed in the righteousness of his actions. He believed in the cause. By taking his time now, keeping the unsuspecting agent occupied, the others could get away.
It was a sacrifice he was willing to make for his friends.

Someone grabbed his arms, jerked them roughly behind his back and Jeff felt the cool familiar metal of handcuffs against his skin and heard the audible clicks of the locks as if they moved in slow motion.

“Make sure you read him his rights,” the agent said. Jeff had yet to catch a glimpse of the man who caught him. “Then evacuate this area,” he heard him say as he was forced to his feet.

“Yes sir, Agent Palmer. You heard the man, people,” another agent yelled to his cohorts as they pulled Jeff Davies around and rushed him away from the bomb he had planted.

He knew there was no time for the bomb squad to arrive. There was nothing the FBI could do. The Treasury Building was about to become one very large pile of rubble.

The last thing Davies saw before being whisked away was the timer reach two minutes.

Counting down.

“What do you think, Harold?”

FBI Special Agent Harold Palmer stood next to his friend, Special Agent in Charge of the Joint Terrorism Task Force Carter Reidling. Harold and Carter had been friends for a long time, partners even longer.
Harold was still getting used to Carter being in charge.

“I think we should be anywhere but here,” Harold deadpanned.

“Funny.”

“I think you should get out of here, Carter.”

“We’ve got a minute.”

Harold pointed to the timer with red numbers counting down. “Fifty-two seconds, actually,” Harold said as he knelt down in front of the bomb. “I don’t think either of us can run that fast any more.”

“Can you diffuse it?”

“Diffuse it?” Harold snorted. “Hell, I shouldn’t even touch it. There’s enough C-4 here to level the building, the parking lot, and about a mile stretch of the highway in either direction.”

“Okay. That’s bad,” Carter said quietly.

As usual, his odd knack for witty dialogue at the wrong moment was in typical form. Harold assumed his friend had seen one too many action movies and was scarred for life by them. Maybe he could arrest Jerry Bruckheimer for corrupting his friend’s common sense.

“Bad is an understatement,” Harold said as he prodded the explosive trigger, pulling it free of the block of the explosive silly putty. “C-4’s out.”

“Okay.”

“Gimme a second, Carter.” Harold said. He used a small pair of needle nose pliers to get inside the small device, careful not to disturb the twin vials of liquid inside. “If these two liquids mix, KA-BOOM.”

Carter flinched slightly, tried to cover it and hoped his friend had not seen the slip in his action hero composure.

“Timer’s reset. We’re back to three minutes,” Harold announced.

“Remind me to give you a raise,” Carter said after letting out the breath he’d been holding. This was not their first run in with explosives so Carter was taking it seriously. Well, as seriously as Carter took anything.

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, boss,” Harold said, standing up slowly. He lifted the explosive device gently, careful not to rattle any of the overly sensitive parts bombs usually had. “There’s still enough explosive in this to do some damage. Maybe take out a floor or twelve.”

“What do you need?”

“Bomb squad would be nice.”

“But you’ll settle for…?”

“Clear me a route out of the building for starters. I think I remember seeing something useful out there,” Harold said as he walked briskly down the corridor. “And we--”

The two liquids started mixing.

“--better hurry!”

Harold, running now, bolted through the open double doors at the building’s rear. Two agents were holding them open for him.

He shouted to them as he passed. “Take cover!”

Now what? Come on, Palmer. Think. Think.

Then he saw it. Right where he remembered.

Bingo!

The garbage truck was sitting at the end of the cul-de-sac at the building’s rear. The driver had parked it and was standing with the gaping onlookers who were being kept out of the way by Washington D.C.’s finest.

Harold tossed the bomb in the back and pushed the button to compact the garbage.

“Get these people…”

Back!” was the word Harold was going to say, but  was replaced by the loud explosion inside the two-ton garbage truck. The blast lifted the truck ever so slightly, sending it toppling over onto its side, which only added to the noise as the truck’s side impacted the concrete.

Harold lay on the ground nearby, face down, arms over his head.

Somewhere close by, someone screamed his name. Probably Carter, but who could tell with all those damned bells and whistles going off all around him. Everything was kind of fuzzy, like he was inside a barrel stuffed with cotton gauze. For a second he couldn’t remember where he was.

Then Carter was there, shaking him. Asking him something, but it was so hard to understand. “Did it work?” Harold asked. At least that’s what he thought he said. “Truck work?”

“Yes,” his friend nodded. Harold wasn’t positive, but he could’ve sworn Carter called him a luck son of a fish. Later he’d realize he just heard it wrong.

An hour later after being thoroughly worked over by EMS, Harold and Carter stood beside the ambulance parked next to the overturned garbage truck. “I can’t believe that worked,” Carter said as the paramedic finished his work up on Agent Palmer, but he doubted Harold was paying much attention to anything except staring at the overturned wreck.

“Is he going to be okay?” Carter asked the medic.

The paramedic, a woman named Sanchez, shrugged. “He suffered a mild concussion which is not surprising considering the size of and his proximity to the explosion.” Carter’s face must have betrayed his concern. “Don’t worry, sir. It’s not as serious as it sounds. The ringing in his ears will fade in a few days. After that, he should have a physician check him over to make sure there’s no permanent damage to his hearing, but he should make a full recovery.”

“Thank you,” Carter said as he pulled a business card from his badge wallet and handed it over to the medic. “Make sure a copy of the report is forwarded to my office, please.”

“Not a problem, Agent… Reidling,” Sanchez said, reading the name off the card. “Does he need a ride home?”

“That’s okay,” Carter waved her off. “I’ll make sure he gets there. Thanks again.”

Walking over to the truck, Carter stepped up next to his friend. “I can’t believe that worked,” he said again.

This time Harold heard him. “Yeah. I was surprised too,” he commented.

Carter gently slapped his friend on the arm. “You know what I think?”

“I shudder to guess.”

“I think someone has seen one too many action movies.”

“Oh, ha, ha. Very funny.”

“I’m also thinking,” Carter said as they turned and left the garbage truck behind, “maybe you need a nice little vacation.”

“You’ll get no argument from me.”

“That,” Carter deadpanned, “would be a pleasant surprise.”

Original published cover
Here’s your first full-sized look at the cover for the upcoming re-release of EVIL WAYS by Bobby Nash. Coming soon from BEN Books.

“Evil Ways was my first published novel and I’m excited to have it coming back in print,” said the author. “From the beginning, I had always planned for FBI Agent Harold Palmer to have additional adventures beyond Evil Ways, as evidenced by the “Harold Palmer will return in Evil Intent” tag I added at the end of the original printing. Sadly, due to a litany of reasons this was delayed. But with the re-release of Evil Ways, Evil Intent is now back on track to come out in early 2013 so the Harold Palmer Thriller series is a go and I couldn’t be happier. I love writing these characters and hope to be telling Harold Palmer stories for years to come.”

Regarding the cover, Nash adds, “This is not the final cover. There are still a few tweaks to make to get it just right, but it’s almost there.”

At that top of the list are Bartlett and West, who must set aside their differences to save the lives of Morehouse's other victims and solve one last game before a dead man’s hired killers catch them and his other enemies.
